Welcome to our guide on high-performance concrete floor coatings. Weather you’re an industrial facility manager or a homeowner looking to upgrade your garage, understanding various concrete coatings is crucial. We’ll explore five popular types: epoxy, polyaspartic, cementitious urethane overlayment, urethane, and specialty coatings, detailing their properties and benefits to help you make an informed decision.
In industrial settings, a durable floor is vital. Cracked or damaged concrete can halt operations, but with Advantage Coating’s industrial concrete floor coatings, your floors will remain protected, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.
Choosing the right coating requires research. With numerous options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. This comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge needed to make the best choice for your space, and our experts are on hand and available to help guide you.
What is an Epoxy Concrete Floor Coating?
Epoxy concrete floor coatings are a two-part mixture consisting of epoxy resin and a hardening agent. When combined, these components create a strong, plastic-like material that adheres tightly to concrete surfaces. Epoxy coatings enhance the durability, appearance, and performance of concrete floors, making them suitable for various applications, from industrial to residential settings
What is A Polyaspartic Concrete Floor Coating?
Polyaspartic concrete floor coating is a type of floor coating that consists of polyaspartic esters, which react with a catalyst to form a strong, durable, and fast-curing surface. This coating enhances the durability, appearance, and performance of concrete floors, making it ideal for various applications, including industrial, commercial, and residential settings.
What are Cementitious Urethane Overlayments?
Commonly referred to as urethane concrete, cementitious urethane is a modified urethane with cement, water, aggregate, and other fine materials. It was originally designed and formulated for the food and beverage industry, able to handle thermal shock of facilities and regular wash downs. Our cementitious urethane overlayments are FDA approved, making them one of the best options for any facility in the food and beverage industry.
What are Urethane Coatings?
Urethane coatings are high-performance surface treatments applied to concrete floors to enhance their durability, appearance, and chemical resistance. These coatings consist of urethane resins that create a strong, flexible, and resilient layer on top of the concrete surface. Urethane coatings are widely used in various industrial, commercial, and residential applications due to their robust properties and versatile benefits.
What are Specialized Coatings?
Specialized coatings refer to advanced formulations engineered to meet specific challenges and requirements across various industries and environments. These coatings are designed to offer enhanced performance, durability, and protection by incorporating unique properties tailored to address distinct applications. Whether it’s providing resistance to chemicals, improving safety with slip-resistant surfaces, or enhancing aesthetics with decorative finishes, specialized coatings deliver targeted solutions that ensure the longevity and functionality of concrete surfaces under demanding conditions. Here are some examples of specialized coatings available:
Static Dissipative Coatings: These coatings are designed to prevent static electricity buildup, making them suitable for environments like electronics manufacturing, clean-rooms, and areas handling flammable materials.
Choosing the right concrete floor coating is crucial for both industrial and residential spaces. Each type of coating – epoxy, polyaspartic, cementitious urethane, urethane, and specialized coatings – offers unique benefits suited to different applications. Epoxy and polyaspartic coatings provide durability, chemical resistance, and aesthetic appeal, making them ideal for industrial, commercial, and residential environments. Cementitious urethane overlayments excel in thermal stability and hygiene, particularly in food and beverage industries. Urethane coatings are versatile and robust, suitable for various settings from healthcare to aerospace. Specialized coatings address specific challenges like antimicrobial protection, high-temperature resistance, and slip resistance designed to enhance safety and functionality.

Why coat your floors?
• To protect the concrete from dusting and eroding over time.
• To create an environment that is easier to maintain and keep clean.
• To improve lighting and/or save on utility costs.
• By improving your physical environment, you will attract top-quality applicants, increase the morale of employees and ensure your customers that they are dealing with a world-class organization.
Why resurface?
• To repair mildly, moderately or severely eroded concrete.
• To create a strong, dense, new surface for less than the cost of slab replacement.
• To improve and protect floors from heavy traffic and severe conditions.
How Long do I need to stay off newly coated floors?
• Most applications take two to three days from the time we start the process to the time you can be back on the area.
• Some products may take up to two weeks to be 100% cured. These floors, with a few precautions, can still be used after 24 hours of application.
How long will the floor coating last?
On average a well maintained floor lasts from 4 to 8 years and in some cases up to 15 years. Floor coatings will last anywhere from two to fifteen years. Here are four things that will help determine the life expectancy of a floor.
• The preparation. The right bond needs to be created for each product.
• The durability of the products being applied.
• The thickness or amount of product being applied. Epoxy can be applied to any thickness you desire. Urethane is confined to 4 mils per coat, but it has better durability characteristics.
• The traffic and housekeeping of the areas. It is very important to keep the area free from dirt and debris. Dirt under traffic works like sand paper and could prematurely wear the surface.
